Endometriosis is a complex disease, and so far a solution has not been proposed for its total resolution. The disease can affect a woman’s quality of life and is the principal threat to the country’s demographic profile as 50% of patients with infertility suffer from endometriosis, as experts say. Dr. habil. med., Chief Obstetrician-Gynecologist of the Health Committee of Saint Petersburg, Professor, Vitaly Bezhenar stressed this fact at the All-Russian Congress “Innovations in obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive medicine” in Saint Petersburg. Women’s health is a complex and sensitive topic that requires extra care from specialists. In her speech at the Congress, Chief External Gynecologist of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Leyla Adamyan noted the lack of full understanding of endometriosis and the reasons behind it. The incidence of infertility in women with external genital endometriosis is increasing and is associated with the adhesions in the pelvic cavity, which leads to changes in the anatomical position of internal pelvic organs and their dysfunction. The most common symptom of endometriosis is pain experienced by 9 of 10 patients. Dr. habil. med., Professor of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov, Maria Yarmolinskaya emphasized: “The quality of life of women with endometriosis is as poor as that of patients with type 1 diabetes, Crohn’s disease, and rheumatoid polyarthritis. And what we can do is to reduce the pain syndrome.” The most common way to treat the adhesions is surgery such as laparoscopy; though this method does not always promote the total elimination of adhesions. Vitaly Bezhenar concluded: “All existing surgical methods of treating adhesions are actually what causes them to reappear again in the future. Any kind of surgery, even if performed brilliantly, is still a trauma.” The speakers also emphasized the importance of pharmacological therapy as an endometriosis treatment option. Drugs with an anti-adhesive and anti-inflammatory mechanism of action, such as Longidaza ® , may be useful in combination therapy. Experts have presented the study results showing that Longidaza ® contributes to the reduction of pain severity and the prevalence of adhesions. The drug regulates the synthesis of inflammatory mediators and can also reduce fibrosis without damaging intact connective tissue.
