Daewoong Pharmaceutical’s diabetes treatment, ‘DWP16001,’ approved for clinical test phase 2 in Korea. 'DWP16001,’ the new medication for SGLT2 diabetes treatment being developed by Daewoong Pharmaceutical (CEO Sengho Jeon), has been approved by KFDA for the phase-2 clinical test plans (IND) on the 30th. Daewoong Pharmaceutical has studied the selective SGLT2 inhibitor that selectively inhibits SGLT2, which involves in the reabsorption of glucose in the process of filtering through the glomerulus in the kidneys so the glucose is not reabsorbed along the renal tubule but discharged with urination.  The phase 2 of the clinical test will use it independently to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of ‘DWP16001’ with about 200 patients at about 30 general hospitals across Korea, including Seoul National University Hospital. Phase 1 has already verified how ‘DWP16001’ effectively secretes urine glucose in healthy people with more than 100 times smaller amount compared to other similar drugs.  When injected repeatedly for 15 days, it secreted over 50 g urine glucose a day compared to 40 g of the control group. “SGLT2 has been dominated by the multinational pharmaceutical companies until today, but Daewoong Pharmaceutical is working with the drugs with distinguished efficacies and we will make efforts to complete the R&D process to settle ‘DWP16001’ as the best in class,’ said Director Joon Seok Park of Daewoong Pharmaceutical New Drug Center. Daewoong Pharmaceutical will establish a pipeline of innovative new drugs for incurable diseases related to the stomach ulcer, diabetes, fibrosis, autoimmunity, and chronic main.  The greatest number of new clinical tests have been initiated this year to strengthen the R&D division.  ‘DWP16001’ will be released in Korea no later than 2023. #   #   #
