Daewoong Pharmaceutical Co.,Ltd(President: Lee Jong-wook) entered into a contract with France-based BioAlliance for the domestic distribution of Sitavig, a drug for the treatment of recurrent herpes labialis, on April 2. Sitavig is applied as a single dose to the upper gum region, increasing the convenience for consumers, unlike the existing treatment drugs that have to be frequently administered during the onset of herpes labialis or applied continuously to the affected area. Sitavig received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2013 and European Medicines Agency (EMA) in 2012 for the sale in recognition of its efficacy. Sitavig, made of acyclovir ingredient that provides antiviral effect, can extend the herpes labialis recurrence-free period by up to 9 months, raising the expectation that its efficacy can be highly recognized in domestic herpes labialis infection market. The infection with herpes labialis causes multiple blisters and sores on the lips. The herpes labialis is a common disease in Korea with roughly 20-40% of population stricken with recurrent herpes labialis. Once infected with herpes labialis, the virus remains inside the body in a latent state. Then, the virus can become activated, causing the herpes labialis to recur, when the infected person is stressed out. Lee Jong-wook, President of Daewoong Pharmaceutical, said, “Our cooperation with BioAlliance has been vital for launching this excellent product in domestic market. We will do everything possible to ensure that Sitavig, which provides greater efficacy and convenience than existing drugs for the treatment of herpes labialis, can gain ground in domestic herpes labialis market.” Judith Greciet, President of BioAlliance, said, “Our contract with Daewoong Pharmaceutical, a leader in Korean pharmaceutical market, creates excellent opportunity for our company ready to make inroads into Asian market. I expect that Sitavig will gain ground in Korea, following its success in many countries worldwide including the United States and Europe.” BioAlliance, a France-based pharmaceutical company, has entered the U.S. and European markets with a focus on the development of anti-cancer agents and rare disease treatment drugs, and recently signed a contract to distribute Sitavig in the North America.
