Daewoong Pharmaceutical (CEO Sengho Jeon) announced on the 8th that the ‘study of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis treatment’ with DWN12088, which is the inhibitor of PRS (Prolyl-tRNASynthetase), the world’s first innovative drug (First-in-Class), has been selected to be funded by Korea Drug Development Fund (President Hyun Sang Mook) for New Drug Development. Therefore, Daewoong Pharmaceutical will be receiving from Korea Drug Development Fund the R&D funds for phase 1 clinical studies and non-clinical studies for DWN12088, the First-in-Class PRS pulmonary fibrosis treatment. Daewoong Pharmaceutical expects to secure powerful antifibrotic efficacies and safety for pulmonary fibrosis to satisfy the unsatisfied medical needs of patients with pulmonary fibrosis and open up the possibilities to export the technology behind this global drug. ‘DWN12088’ is an orally injected fibrosis treatment that selectively reduces the activation of PRS protein to inhibit the excess generation of collagen that causes pulmonary fibrosis.  As a result of pre-clinical studies, it has been highly effective for the animal models with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), which is incurable pulmonary fibrosis. “DWN12088 PRS inhibitor is a potential material that enhances the capacity of Daewoong Pharmaceutical new drug studies and we expect that its powerful antifibrotic efficacies and broad safety would be able to satisfy the unmet needs of patients with pulmonary fibrosis who have been suffering because there are no safe drugs,” said Joon Seok Park, the chief of Daewoong Pharmaceutical New Drug Center.  “Also, we will be conducting clinical studies for various other fibrotic diseases with no effective treatment to lay the foundation for Daewoong Pharmaceutical’s global new drug technologies to export.” Korea Drug Development Fund is the R&D program funded by the Korean government to support new drug development regardless of government offices and plans to establish systems to develop more than 10 global new drugs by 2020.
