New preclinical research from EPFL and OM Pharma has revealed a potential new mechanism behind how Uro-Vaxom® (OM-89) may help prevent recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), one of the most common bacterial infections worldwide. Published in PLOS Pathogens, the study found that OM-89 may help strengthen the bladder's natural defenses against bacteria that can persist after treatment and contribute to recurrent UTIs. Researchers also observed that OM-89 helped antibiotics reach bacteria hidden within bladder cells, reducing bacterial regrowth in preclinical models. OM-89 is an oral bacterial lysate that has been used for decades in the prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections. While it is known to support the immune system, these preclinical findings provide new insights into how OM-89 may also help the bladder's own cells eliminate bacteria more effectively. "While the results come from preclinical models and do not change the approved indication or use of OM-89, they deepen our understanding of how it may help strengthen the bladder's natural defenses against recurrent infection and reinforce the scientific foundation supporting its use," said Christian Pasquali, Senior Scientific Liaison Director at OM Pharma. The findings contribute to a growing body of research exploring how strengthening host defenses may help address recurrent urinary tract infections while supporting more effective use of antibiotics.
