Daewoong Pharmaceutical Unveils Phase 3 Clinical Data of Gastric Acid Blocker Fexuprazan for the First Time - Selected as ‘Poster of Distinction’ at the DDW2020(Digestive Disease Week) - Proved its efficacy as a gastric acid blocker with outstanding inhibition of gastric acid secretion and safety - To actively enter and target the KRW 40 trillion global market Daewoong Pharmaceutical (Daewoong) (CEO Sengho Jeon) unveiled for the first time its phase 3 clinical data of the next-generation gastroesophageal reflux disease drug called Fexuprazan at the 2020 Digestive Disease Week (DDW). While the conference was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the study results of Fexuprazan were chosen as ‘Poster of Distinction’, which means the best poster of the top 10% and published in the form of e-Poster on May 2 (local time). Fexuprazan, the novel gastroesophageal reflux disease drug originally developed by Daewoong, is a potassium-competitive acid blocker (P-CAB), which reversibly blocks the proton pump that secretes gastric acids from the stomach wall. It is a next-generation drug in proton pump inhibitors (PPI), which are widely used for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). A phase 3 clinical trial in Korea was completed on patients with erosive GERD, and additional clinical trials are in progress to obtain indications for the secretion of various acids. The results of this phase 3 clinical trial include patients with erosive GERD from 25 hospitals in Korea. According to the results, Fexuprazan showed 99% in the treatment rate up to 8 weeks of endoscopic mucosal defect treatment and confirmed good tolerability and safety with little discomfort and side effect when taken by patients. The drug showed the effects of gastric acid secretion inhibition, which can improve both endoscopic treatment rates and symptoms. Whether daytime or nighttime, heartburn symptoms were improved immediately from early in drug administration, and so were cough symptoms, one of the atypical symptoms of GERD. In particular, administered on patients with worse symptoms, the drug was confirmed to be effective for 3 times the number of patients in the control group administered with esomeprazole. Sengho Jeon, CEO of Daewoong, said, “Based on the phase 3 clinical data of symptom improvements, we are deeply committed to developing Fexuprazan as a best-in-class GERD drug. With these published study results, we are expecting acceleration in partnership to commercialize Fexuprazan quickly in the global market such as the US and China.” Meanwhile, Daewoong signed an agreement to export Fexuprazan to Mexico this January, and with active advances in the global market, the drug is expected to position itself as a next-generation global blockbuster novel drug in the KRW 40 trillion GERD therapeutics market. #   #   #
