A preclinical research paper on the radiosensitizer “KORTUC” has been published in Clinical and Translational Radiation Oncology, the official journal published by the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology(ESTRO). The study was conducted by the research team led by Prof. Mark De Ridder at UZ Brussel (Brussels, Belgium), with whom KORTUC INC. has been collaborating since 2021. The research identified a potential new mechanism by which KORTUC may modulate the tumor immune microenvironment. The paper, entitled “Exploring the role of hydrogen peroxide in the immune microenvironment of hypoxic tumors,” demonstrated that KORTUC may not only enhance radiosensitivity through improved tumor reoxygenation, but may also contribute to remodeling the tumor microenvironment. Specifically, the study showed that KORTUC promoted immunogenic cell death, preserved T-cell function within tumors, and selectively reduced immunosuppressive M2-like macrophages. These findings provide important scientific rationale supporting the potential of KORTUC to help overcome hypoxia-driven immune suppression and improve therapeutic response in solid tumors. Comment from Kazuyuki Matsuda, CEO of KORTUC Inc. “We are currently advancing a registrational Phase II study in breast cancer while also expanding into additional indications including rectal cancer and cervical cancer. KORTUC is being developed with the goal of commercialization in the U.S. and Europe, followed by broader global expansion. We believe this research highlights the potential for KORTUC to play a broader role in future cancer treatment strategies. We remain committed to advancing both research and clinical development.” Read the full study here: Clinical and Translational Radiation Oncology
