Daewoong Pharmaceutical’s Nabota proves its efficacy in hair loss through clinical trials - The amount of hair was significantly increased within a period of 6 months - Research results were published in the December edition of an SCI journal, the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD) - Additional clinical trials are being carried out on administration methods that increased convenience and efficacy Daewoong Pharmaceutical has discovered evidence that Nabota, an independently developed botulinum toxin, can become a treatment for male pattern baldness. Daewoong Pharmaceutical (Daewoong) (CEO Sengho Jeon) announced that the baldness alleviation effects—which were proved through clinical trials—of Nabota will be published in the December edition of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD). JAAD is a journal which boasts one of the highest impact factors in the field of dermatology. The study was carried out for the purpose of confirming the efficacy and safety of botulinum toxin in treating male pattern baldness. Physicians selected about 20 areas where baldness has progressed and administered Nabota a total of 6 times, once every 4 weeks. For each administration, 30 units (U) were injected, which adds up to a total of 180 units (U) for 24 weeks, the total duration of the study. As a result, the amount of hair significantly increased statistically at week 24 compared to the start of the study. Additionally, the hair loss has statistically reduced in the visual evaluation of researchers based on PGA(physician’s global assessment scale) standards. There were no reported serious adverse effects related to the drug. Byungchul Park, a professor of Dermatology at Dankook University who carried out this study, also confirmed that a precedent study displayed that Nabota has shown effects of inhibiting TGF-β1, a substance that induces telogen and baldness. Professor Park added, “As TGF-β1 is inhibited through the injection of botulinum toxin to the hair follicle in the dermis, the period of hair in its growth period is extended, and as it prevents hair loss due to telogen, the total amount of hair increased. This study is significant as it proved that botulinum toxins can become a treatment for male pattern baldness and its scientific analysis of the treatment mechanism.” Seongsoo Park, the director of the Nabota business said, “The clinical trials of Nabota being published in a prestigious international journal has become an opportunity to strengthen Nabota’s differentiated competitiveness. We will strengthen our position as a botulinum toxin brand by promoting our outstanding products and technology to medical staff across the world which were proven by obtaining approval from strict regulatory agencies in the United States, Europe, and Canada.” On the other hand, the research team of Byungchul Park (Dankook University Basic and Clinical Hair Research Institute) are currently undergoing phase-2 clinical trials on patients with male pattern baldness, which will extend the interval of administration to 3 months and increase the dose of Nabota for single injections in order to research a more effective and convenient treatment for baldness. # # # [Photo] Visual evaluation of researchers on the parts of hair loss between before Nabota injection (A) and 24 weeks after injection (B)
