Daewoong Pharmaceutical, established a difference in scar care effects by a medication timing based on a clinical research, ‘NABOTA.’ - Confirmed the proper point when botulinum toxin was injected on scars within patients who got surgery to remove thyroid. - This was the first comparative research on ‘a point in time’ when injecting botulinum toxin on the surgical lesions and highly effective to heal scars when it was administered on the day of surgery. - Published in the October Issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, PRS that is a SCI-level international journal. Daewoong Pharmaceutical (CEO: Sengho Jeon) announced new outcomes from the investigator initiated trial about effects of their, botulinum toxin, NABOTA on improvement of scars. Daewoong Pharmaceutical said that they proved a difference in its effects to improve scars by each point of administering the medicine based on a clinical test conducted by researchers who injected NABOTA for scar care of patients who got surgery to remove thyroid in November 7th, 2019. This study was published in the October issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, PRS that is a SCI-level international journal. The research was conducted to verify the most appropriate timing of injecting botulinum toxin for scar management of surgical patients under the guidance of a professor, Park Eun-joo of College of Dermatology, Hallym University. To date, the injection of botulinum toxin into surgical lesions, at different postoperative times, has been shown to be effective for preventing scarring, but no study has compared different timings for intralesional injections using a split-scar experiment.’ In the research of the patients, the researchers parted the scarred area after the surgery right and left at its midpoint and injected NABOTA onto one side on the day of the surgery and onto the other side two weeks after it. After then, they compared and evaluated how it affected the scars on both sides two, four, twelve, and twenty-four weeks after the surgery. For this evaluation, the modified Stony Brook Scar Evaluation Scale, mSBSES, was used and dermatologists who didn’t handle with this test separately carried out another test for the objective scar improvement assessment. Furthermore, they carried forward a patient satisfaction evaluation using Visual Analogue Scale, VAS in order to confirm the degree of their satisfaction. They also measured melanin index, red spot (Erythema) index, and degree of skin elasticity using a skin probe 24 weeks after the surgery and additionally assessed the quantitative enhancement of the scars. As a result, they found that there was a statistically significant difference in the fourth week of the surgery, showing that the scarred area injected NABOTA right after the surgery showed better mSBSES scores than the area where the injection was made two weeks later. In the VAS evaluation carried on the fourth, twelfth, and twenty-fourth week of the surgery, patients were more highly satisfied by the improvement of their surgical lesions administered NABOTA on the day of the surgery. Moreover, according to a result of another evaluation using a skin probe carried out on the twenty-fourth week of the surgery, they determined that the scarred area administered with NABOTA on the day of the surgery was highly enhanced when it comes to red spot (Erythema) index and degree of skin elasticity compared to that two weeks after the surgery. There was no report on serious abnormal cases related to medicines. Seongsoo Park who is the head of Neurotoxin Business Division of Daewoong Pharmaceutical said, “This research scientifically proved the appropriate timing of injecting NABOTA for its scar enhancement effect and care and resulted in the additional potential of NABOTA to be available in the field of beauty care as well as other treatments. We will demonstrate the differentiated competitiveness of NABOTA worldwide with various researches.” #  #  # [Photo 1] (From top to bottom): Stony Brook Scar Evaluation Scale, mSBSES for the scarred area two, four, twelve, and twenty-four weeks after administering NABOTA (mSBSES, 0 = remarkable scars ~ 8 = scars improved), Degree of Patient Satisfaction (VAS, 0 = the worst result we can imagine ~ 10 = the best result), (a part of the research published in PRS) [Photo 2] These photos are scars appeared two (top) and twenty-four (bottom) weeks after administering NABOTA onto the area where thyroid was removed.
