Daewoong Pharmaceutical’s Nabota Confirmed Its Palliative Effect on Bruxism in Clinical Trial Findings - Confirmed less teeth grinding as the masseter weakened after the administration of Nabota - Confirmed its potential to expand into not just the beauty market, but also the therapeutic market Daewoong Pharmaceutical (Daewoong) (CEO Sengho Jeon) announced that clinical trial findings on the effect of its original botulinum toxin product Nabota on nocturnal bruxism (teeth grinding) were published in the SCI-level journal Toxins. This clinical trial administered Nabota to patients suffering from bruxism and confirmed its effect on weakening the masseter, which affects teeth grinding. The masseter is one of the masticatory muscles at the side of the jaw. Professor Seong-taek Kim’s oral medicine research team at Yonsei University College of Dentistry conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo control study by administrating Nabota and the placebo to confirm the botulinum toxin’s effect on teeth grinding during sleep. After administrating Nabota or the placebo to the masseter, the research team used electromyography to measure strength applied to the masseter during maximal voluntary clenching (MVC) and rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA) through polysomnography (PSG), which measures sleep disorders. It was measured right after the administration of Nabota and 4 weeks and 12 weeks after such administration. The results showed that the Nabota group had improved symptoms of bruxism as the masseter weakened compared to the placebo group and this effect was maintained for 12 weeks. Furthermore, no serious drug-related adverse event was reported. This study demonstrated that botulinum toxin treatment may serve as an alternative for bruxism patients along with an occlusal splint. Professor Kim said, “This study confirmed Nabota’s effect on reducing bruxism symptoms when administered to bruxism patients. It supported that the pathogenesis of bruxism, which has not been accurately identified so far, is not a sleep disorder but a normal physiological phenomenon where anyone applies strength to their jaw.” Seongsoo Park, head of Daewoong’s Neurotoxin Business Division, said, “This study confirmed Nabota’s effect on weakening the masseter related to bruxism and served as an opportunity to discover Nabota’s additional potential in not just beauty but also therapeutics. We will continue to do various research activities to demonstrate Nabota’s differentiated competitiveness and expand globally.” # # #
